Spring Flowers Discovered at Osaka Castle Park
Spring Flowers Discovered at Osaka Castle Park
Plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, as well as azaleas, dogwood flowers, and Noda wisteria.
I have been living in Osaka for three years. Cities usually give the impression of having little greenery, but in reality, Osaka city has surprisingly rich natural surroundings, such as the Nakanoshima Rose Garden and the ginkgo tree-lined Midosuji Boulevard. Among them, Osaka Castle Park is a very spacious, peaceful retreat with many flowers and trees.
This time, I studied the spring flowers blooming from March to May at Osaka Castle Park, a must-visit spot for Osaka sightseeing.
The arrival of spring in Osaka Castle is announced by this plum grove. The plum blossoms in full bloom are the first flowers to bloom in spring. From January to mid-March, you can enjoy the beauty of about 100 varieties of plum blossoms blooming in sequence. In the approximately 1.7-hectare plum grove, the view of Osaka Castle seen through the gaps between the various characterful plum blossoms is truly beautiful! It is a very popular photo spot.
Even bees are drawn to the plum blossoms! The blooming of plum blossoms signals that spring is near, which is truly exciting!
Then come the most gorgeous and thrilling cherry blossoms! Osaka Castle Park is a renowned cherry blossom viewing spot in the Kansai region, selected as one of the top 100 cherry blossom viewing sites, with about 3,000 cherry trees planted.
Look! Cherry blossoms in full bloom, the clear blue sky, and endless cherry blossoms—so beautiful, aren't they? Many people are smiling and taking photos under the cherry trees. The charm of cherry blossoms is truly unbeatable!
The road along the south outer moat. The cherry blossoms in full bloom on both sides form a tunnel.
The cherry blossoms extending over the moat are also beautiful... Just looking at them is so healing.
I also took a photo with the cherry blossoms. It really feels like spring. The flower language of cherry blossoms is 'beauty of heart,' 'elegant woman,' and 'purity.' The Japanese cherry blossoms are exactly that—pure and beautiful. Whenever I admire such scenery, I feel that living in Japan is truly wonderful.
This is the view of cherry blossoms from the south side of the east outer moat. The contrast with the modern buildings of Osaka Business Park is striking and very appealing.
Continuing up the long stairs, from the inner moat side, you can see a view where the castle keep and cherry blossoms blend together.
The most famous and common cherry blossom variety in Japan is 'Somei Yoshino.' After the Somei Yoshino petals fall, in the area coming up from Tamatsukuri entrance, the Yaezakura (double-flowered cherry blossoms) come into full bloom. If you happen to miss the peak cherry blossom season, this spot is highly recommended.
Osaka Castle Park has many varieties of cherry blossoms, so the cherry blossom viewing season is longer than elsewhere. By walking around different areas, you can enjoy cherry blossoms with different atmospheres.
But Osaka Castle is not just about cherry blossoms. A variety of flowers bloom in succession, and you can enjoy flowers no matter when you visit—that's the best part of the park! Not to mention that Osaka Castle Park is full of historical romance, and the continuous blooming of flowers throughout the seasons adds even more romance to Osaka Castle.
Blooming at the same time as the cherry blossoms are hydrangeas, and in the Deutzia garden, flowers called 'butterfly flowers.' They grow in clusters under the trees and are very beautiful.
By the water, Japanese irises (Iris sanguinea) are in bloom. Their vivid blue stands out against the green backdrop.
Did you know that Osaka Castle Park not only has a plum grove but also a peach garden? Against the backdrop of the business park, the deep, rich pink of the peach blossoms is strikingly vibrant, blooming proudly. From around mid-March, different varieties of peach blossoms bloom in sequence.
In the latter half of April, azaleas can be enjoyed all over the park. The front of Osaka Castle's keep is also a famous spot for azalea viewing.
Take a luxurious photo with the colorful azaleas and Osaka Castle!
In the area coming up from Tamatsukuri entrance, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of azaleas contrasting with the stone walls.
Near Tamatsukuri entrance, there is a wisteria trellis with Noda wisteria.
It is said that the wisteria reaches full bloom from late April to May.
Along the inner moat, there are dogwood flowers (Kousa dogwood).
From Gokuraku Bridge, you can take a photo of the dogwood flowers and the castle keep.
In front of the castle keep, I discovered a fringe tree (also known as 'April Snow') in full bloom. The name is interesting. (laughs) It has a lovely fragrance.
The official website of Osaka Castle Park publishes a flower viewing map with detailed information on flower varieties and blooming periods.
Please use it as a reference and enjoy the seasonal flowers at Osaka Castle Park all year round.
