In late June 2024, I joined a tour group called 'Intoxicating Eastern Europe. Classic Five-Country Tour: Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria 12 Days' and traveled to Eastern Europe. In just a few days, we visited five countries: Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Austria. We explored the cities and towns of Frankfurt, Würzburg, and Munich in Germany; the capital Prague and the town of Český Krumlov in the Czech Republic; the capital Bratislava in Slovakia; the capital Budapest and the Lake Balaton region in Hungary; and the capital Vienna, the town of Hallstatt, and Salzburg in Austria. We saw the urban landscapes, historical sites, and scenic attractions, many of which are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Along the way, we also passed countless unnamed towns, villages, lakes, and mountains, enjoying nearly 2,600 kilometers of picturesque scenery and exotic charm—truly classic, romantic, colorful, unique, and boundless.
Although a group tour inevitably involves a rushed, superficial sightseeing style, the things we saw and experienced—especially the historically rich architecture, magnificent landscapes, fascinating legends, and unique local customs—still ignited our passion and interest in travel. It was a feast for the eyes, leaving us deeply impressed and reluctant to leave, while also enriching and broadening our minds. When we embark on a journey, exploring the world through personal experience and action, it fills our hearts and expands our horizons.

The specific dates of this trip were June 23 to July 4, a total of 12 days. Excluding the 3 days spent on check-in and flights to and from, only 9 days were available for sightseeing. Roughly, Germany took about 2.5 days; the Czech Republic and Slovakia 2 days; Hungary 2 days; and Austria 2.5 days (including travel time between countries and cities).
For this Eastern Europe group tour, apart from the flights to and from, all transportation between the five countries was by bus. The same bus, from picking us up at the airport, accompanied the group members as we traveled between cities, attractions, and hotels in these five countries, covering nearly 2,600 kilometers until the end of the trip when it dropped us off at Frankfurt Airport. We were very fortunate not only to have a brand-new and well-maintained Mercedes-Benz bus but also to have a skilled, hardworking, and hospitable driver. Every day he kept the bus spotless, arranged the luggage properly, and transported everyone safely and smoothly to various countries, cities, attractions, and hotels. Such professionalism and service attitude truly deserve a big thumbs-up.
Additionally, according to the usual division of Eastern, Western, Southern, Northern, and Central Europe, Germany does not belong to Eastern Europe. Probably due to flight routes and schedules, this trip flew directly from Shenzhen to Frankfurt, Germany, and returned from Frankfurt to Shenzhen. Thus, Frankfurt became an important flight point and transit hub. So even though the tour was called 'Eastern Europe Tour', it also included the opportunity to visit two cities in Central Europe: Frankfurt and Munich.

First Stop: Germany (Day 2, Day 9, Day 10)
Although Germany was only a transit point for this Eastern Europe tour, according to the scheduled itinerary, both the outward and return journeys arranged considerable time for stops and sightseeing. On Day 2, we visited Würzburg’s old town, the Würzburg Residence gardens, and the Alte Mainbrücke (Old Main Bridge). On Day 9, we visited Munich’s Max-Joseph-Platz, the Bavarian State Opera (exterior), Marienplatz, and the Hofbräuhaus. On Day 10, we visited Frankfurt’s Römerberg Square, the Main River promenade, and Frankfurt Cathedral.

The picturesque old town of Würzburg lies on the Main River. The railings of the Alte Mainbrücke are adorned with statues of great figures who founded Würzburg. The city gate is the Schelbertor, built in 1482, which was destroyed during World War II and later rebuilt. UNESCO has listed it as a World Heritage Site.

Munich is located on the Alpine foreland (Bavarian Plateau) and on the banks of the Isar River, a tributary of the Danube. It is the capital of Bavaria, the political, economic, and cultural center of the state, the largest city in Bavaria, and the third-largest city in Germany. Its hinterland is vast, making it one of Germany's main agricultural and pastoral areas. Industry has shifted from heavy to light, with diverse sectors such as electronics, automotive, and machinery being highly developed, and traditional crafts like lithography, sculpture, and ceramics are renowned.

Frankfurt, also known as Frankfurt am Main, is located on both banks of the Main River, on a large plain south of the Taunus Mountains. It is the fifth-largest city in Germany, covering an area of 249 square kilometers. Frankfurt has Germany's largest aviation hub and railway hub, and is an important industrial, commercial, and financial center, a trade fair city, and the country's and even Europe's gateway to the world and transportation hub.

1. Overall, the climate during this season for traveling to Eastern Europe was quite pleasant. During the day, it was sunny with blue skies and white clouds, neither hot nor cold, very comfortable. Temperatures mostly ranged around 20 degrees Celsius, suitable for short-sleeved or long-sleeved shirts. Mornings and evenings were cooler, requiring a light jacket. At noon, it could feel a bit hot in direct sunlight, but once you stepped into the shade or anywhere out of the sun, it became significantly cooler.
2. Although the temperature was generally pleasant, there were exceptions. When we arrived in Vienna, Austria, at around 2 PM, the temperature reached over 30 degrees Celsius, and the sunlight was particularly strong—it was the hottest and warmest place on this trip. According to the local guide, the climate in Europe has been somewhat abnormal in recent years, with higher temperatures this year. On the way back, when we reached Munich, Germany, a sudden rain caused the weather to turn cold quickly. That evening, many group members took out wool sweaters or thick jackets that had been packed at the bottom of their suitcases. So when traveling, it's important to bring enough clothes to be prepared for unexpected conditions.
3. Hats, sunglasses, and umbrellas—items for sun and rain protection—are all essential.
4. During this season, the time difference between Eastern European countries and China is 6 hours, meaning local time is 6 hours behind China.
