Living Up to Its Stellar Reputation! I’ve Finally Ticked Off Qingdao’s Must-Visit Hotspots This Holiday

Envious of everyone else’s foodie adventures and fun outings, I’ve often dreamed of ticking off those iconic places myself. Taking advantage of this rare holiday, I at last made the rounds to all these crowd-favorites.

NO.1 The Trending Zhan Bridge Seagulls

Zhan Bridge was without a doubt Qingdao’s hottest spot in 2021. When fine weather coincided with the Spring Festival holiday, it seemed like everyone decided to head there and feed the seagulls. Rumor has it that in past years the gulls relied on volunteers to survive the winter, but this Spring Festival they were so stuffed they couldn’t care less about the bread being held out to them.

I missed the massive crowds during the holiday itself, but I could still come for an off-peak feeding session afterwards. These spirited travelers from Siberia trek all the way here to winter, adding a touch of liveliness to the vast sea and absolutely delighting animal-loving kids. The children eagerly toss food, making the gulls cluster, swoop low, and circle overhead in a constant show of precision snack-snatching. Laughter, waves, and sea breezes – springtime at Zhan Bridge is simply idyllic.

You can come prepared or empty-handed; there are always vendors selling food along the beach. Four bags of fried dough sticks for 10 yuan are among the gulls’ favorites. But if you want to feed them, you’d better hurry – following the natural order of migration, these gulls will be heading “home” before too long.

NO.2 The Joy That Costs Just 8.5 Yuan Is Well Worth It

The film ‘A Little Red Flower’ put Taipingshan Cableway in the limelight and brought a little heat to the usually low-key zoo. An 8.5 yuan ticket price delivers a long-missed dose of happiness. Qingdao Zoo is divided into east and west sections, big enough to keep you and the kids occupied for half a day, and you won’t feel squeezed. There are animals galore – not just the usual monkeys, deer, camels, tigers, and small critters like marmots, but also the much-loved national treasure, the giant panda.

I’ve been to the zoo a few times, but this visit revealed a few new things. First, they’ve added animal interaction experiences. You can buy food to feed the goats, rabbits, and pigeons. The price isn’t too steep – about 10 yuan per serving.

Second, they’ve added children’s rides. Mini planes, carousels, and the like – separately charged, at varying prices. As I recall, you can also get multi-ride tickets. When the kids get tired of watching animals, they can go have some fun on those. The zoo today really reminds me of my own childhood, when I’d pester to go to the park every single weekend – you could see animals and play games all in one place. It’s a simple, honest kind of joy. In this bustling city, on a bright spring day, throwing yourself into nature and having fun is a real delight.

NO.3 The Island City’s Popular Science Enlightenment Experience Hub

During my day at Zhan Bridge, I stumbled upon some cheeky little characters that planted the idea of taking my child to the Hisense Discovery Center again. The Hisense Discovery Center is absolutely the top family-entertainment draw in town; you come across it constantly across different media. Ages 3–4 are the sensitive period for science enlightenment. After our first visit last June, my child fell in love with the place, we got an annual pass on the spot, and we’ve been regulars ever since.

Beyond the strong science focus – where kids actually learn while they play – the biggest highlight is the non-stop stream of events. With the annual pass, we’ve hardly missed a single one. From daytime sessions to evening ones, we go at least once or twice a month.

This holiday, we happened to catch their Spring Festival celebration: red envelope draws, lion dances, robot dogs, science shows, all kinds of science classes. Our day was packed from start to finish.

Over a year of playing here, I’ve really seen my child grow. It went from being a playground to a classroom, from innocent bewilderment to curious questions, and then even started to turn the tables and explain science to us. My child has developed so much more curiosity about the world, and a deeper understanding of it too.

NO.4 The Internet-Famous Parent-Child Paradise in a Mall

This might be the most reviewed family experience hall on Dianping aside from the Discovery Center. Located on the third floor of CapitaMall, the twisted, clock-shaped slide at the entrance is the most eye-catching feature. Its bright, audaciously contrasting colors always turn heads.

Aside from its stunning looks, the biggest draw here is the little train inside. It departs right on the hour and the ride is short – around three or four minutes – but it’s packed the moment it starts moving. There are also a few interactive activities, like a shooting game and handicraft classes, all open at set times. But because a single-admission ticket only gets you two hours of play, you probably won’t be able to try them all. That’s the real pity.

The space isn’t huge, and a two-hour ticket is just enough for kids to have a total blast.

The holiday may be short, but the happiness is long. Spring is here, and plenty of exciting journeys are still waiting to unfold. On the next holiday, my date with spring will continue!
