Hidden Gem Near Jiuzhaigou: An Unmissable Tibetan Cultural Experience
Everyone knows ‘Jiuzhai Paradise’ as one of the must-visit places in my life. Its naturally formed beauty outlines a fairyland on earth, deeply shocking me with its ‘fairy-tale world.’ Unexpectedly, after arriving at Jiuzhaigou, the local Tibetan and Qiang culture was even more captivating. The nature and culture far exceeded my expectations, leaving no regrets from the Jiuzhai trip.
This Jiuzhai trip, we arrived at Zhongcha Valley Jiuzhai Luneng Resort and stayed at the Hotel Indigo Jiuzhaigou. As the first stop of the itinerary, I must say the hotel’s uniquely regional design was stunning and ignited my passion for exploring Tibetan and Qiang culture.
Hotel Indigo Jiuzhaigou skillfully integrates local culture into its design, presenting the ‘Dele Mansion’ created with Amdo Tibetan culture. The lobby centers on a traditional Tibetan fireplace, with wooden ceilings and colorful carpets resembling artworks. Every detail exudes a sense of nobility.
The hotel was designed by the renowned Hong Kong-based design firm CCD, with the ‘sacred eagle’ as the main inspiration. Throughout the space, local Tibetan life art elements such as Xiangba, Qiang embroidery, yaks, and fire pits are scattered, giving me new understanding and imagination of the local culture.
In addition to regional culture, modernity is cleverly blended in. The unique lighting gives the three-story spiral staircase a strong three-dimensional feel, precise and stylish. It can be said to be a rare photo-worthy spot in the hotel—great photos from any angle.
The hotel creatively designs several unique outdoor courtyards on different floors. Inside the courtyards are ‘Zang·Cang’ themed rooms, decorated with traditional Qiang fabric embroidery and the unique Thangka paintings of the Aba Tibetan region. The overall warm-tone design of the rooms makes one feel cozy and comfortable. Stepping into the room, you can immerse yourself in Tibetan and Qiang culture.
The You·Zang Neighborhood Restaurant, symbolizing harvest, has golden yellow as its main color and design tone, blending traditional Tibetan aristocratic etiquette elements. For dinner, we tasted the hotel’s signature dish—Tibetan hot pot, perfectly simmered to meet our expectations of Tibetan cuisine. The naturally slow-cooked bone broth from yak tail bones, paired with seasonal vegetables, and a bowl of local special yak yogurt—authentic Tibetan delicacies linger in memory.
After the meal, the featured Kung Fu tea experience represents a meticulous lifestyle. The locally characteristic tea set and surrounding folk atmosphere complement each other. Sip slowly and savor—do not drink it all in one go.
Every aspect, whether dining or other hotel facilities, is very thoughtful, reflecting the effort Hotel Indigo Jiuzhaigou puts into integrating regional characteristics. The ingenious combination of Tibetan and Qiang ethnic life portrayals with modern design spaces fully demonstrates the hotel’s pursuit of detail and interpretation of experience.
Besides Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area, there are many places to explore nearby. This time, we visited the intangible cultural heritage town meticulously built by China Green Development · Luneng Group—Jiuzhai Luneng Meili Hui.
From the hotel to the town entrance, a set of Tibetan chess board design increased our curiosity for this ‘intangible heritage tour,’ and we excitedly stepped into the town’s intangible cultural heritage museum.
The museum is filled with numerous art treasures and artifacts that dazzle the eyes: exquisite Thangkas, and mandalas meticulously crafted from ground gemstone powders. Rich paintings interpret Jiuzhai’s unique Tibetan folk customs and culture. Here, you can see the continuous evolution of Tibetan elements in history, appreciate the daily life of Tibetan and Qiang people, and even experience the reappearance of a mandala from 2,500 years ago through holographic projection.
Leaving the intangible cultural heritage museum, we discovered more interesting activities in the town: the Tibetan paper shop ‘Xiuman Tibetan Paper’ and the Tibetan incense shop ‘Shilun Tibetan Incense.’ If interested, you can personally try making Tibetan paper and incense, deeply experiencing the inheritance of these crafts. We were fortunate to witness the weaving process of traditional Tibetan fabric. I have to admire the wisdom of ethnic minorities—colorful threads and exquisite patterned fabrics were made with simple tools and skillful hands.
The town is full of distinct Tibetan cultural elements, including the Tibetan white pagoda in the square, prayer flags hanging high on the streets, and locals dressed in Tibetan clothing. Unexpectedly, the town also has brand stores like KFC, Starbucks, and Watsons, well balancing locality and modernity.
The cultural exploration of Meili Hui Town left a lasting impression, especially the immersive cultural experiences. Returning to the hotel, we found that many elements echoed the hotel’s design, truly reflecting the thoughtfulness of the hotel’s design.
Whether the cultural immersion at the hotel or the intangible cultural heritage town, it made this Jiuzhai trip uniquely flavorful. Jiuzhaigou’s natural beauty is already unforgettable; being able to deeply experience its regional culture makes every second of this journey worthwhile.
