Chen Lingzhi: South-to-North Water Diversion Migrants
The middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project is the world's largest inter-basin ecological water transfer project. It diverts water from the Danjiangkou Reservoir on the Han River in the south to solve water shortages in Henan, Hebei, Beijing, and Tianjin. To allow gravity flow, the Danjiangkou Reservoir dam was raised to an elevation of 176.6 meters, inundating areas in Henan and Hubei provinces and requiring the relocation of approximately 330,000 people, of whom 230,000 needed to be moved to other places. From August 20, 2009, to September 18, 2012, all 330,000 migrants were relocated. Huanghu Migrant New Village in Tuanfeng Town, Tuanfeng County, Huanggang City, Hubei Province, is the largest resettlement area for the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. A total of 874 households, 3,723 migrants, left their homes from the Danjiangkou Reservoir area in Shiyan and now live and work here in peace, starting their new lives and happiness.
